Initial challenge

(01)

Aero is a unique product in its class: it is the first air-cushion mower on the market to be powered by batteries; the result is a product that combines the best of both technologies, delivering to the end user a tool that is lightweight, handy, easy to use and convenient to store.

The challenge Stiga involved us in was to bring battery power, the most environmentally sustainable technology currently available, to a category that, for technical reasons, was only powered by petrol engines or corded electric power.

The latter makes it possible to keep the mower light, but involves several inconveniences and limitations, while the internal combustion engine, besides being polluting and noisy, makes the product heavy and unwieldy.

For these reasons, the battery is undoubtedly the most convenient, efficient and environmentally friendly choice.

Technology

(02)

Air cushion technology uses the rotating motion of the blades to create a cushion of air under the mower deck, making it float on the lawn.

The lack of wheels allows the mower to be moved in all directions without constraint, making it perfect for tight corners, and in general exceptionally maneuverable.

Architecture

(03)

At the structural level, it was decided to place the batteries not on the cutting surface (as is usually the case in lawn mowers) but in a special housing on the handle, to optimize weight distribution and facilitate access.

Style

(04)

As for the product’s composition and style, the absence of wheels and the resulting ‘multidirectionality’ of the lawn mower suggested not giving the object a too pronounced ‘directionality’; we therefore aimed to stylistically impart the appearance of a high-performance object to be used in full relaxation and safety.

We opted for an almost ‘octagonal’ shape that combines aesthetics and function. On the sides, ample freedom of movement is left for the handle, while the front and back are similar, giving the object a balanced and poised stance.

Finally, the wide range of movement of the handle and the horizontal development of the cutting deck allow the mower to be conveniently stored on the wall with minimal space requirements.

Final considerations

(05)

The collaboration with Stiga, combined with their extraordinary airflow optimization work and patented design of the cutting deck, has resulted in a unique product. This innovative mower is handy, lightweight, easy to use, and convenient to store, making it perfect for those who have to take care of a small-to medium-sized garden.
